EV chargers in San Francisco

This page counts the EV charging stations that OpenStreetMap volunteers have mapped within 6 miles of central San Francisco, and shows which plugs they have and how many list 50 kW or more. The numbers are worked out in your browser from the same data files as the finder, so they match the list you get there.

The numbers

Charging stations
–within 6 miles
50 kW or faster

–no kW mapped

Plugs at these stations

Each row is the number of stations that list at least one plug of that kind. A station with two kinds of plug is counted in both rows, so the rows add up to more than the total.

How these numbers are counted

The circle is drawn around 37.7749, -122.4194, in central San Francisco (the Civic Center area), with a radius of 6 miles, measured in a straight line. When this page opens, your browser reads the few data files of this site that cover the circle, the same files the finder reads, and counts the stations whose point or center falls inside it.

A station is counted once, however many plugs it has. It counts as fast when at least one plug lists 50 kW or more. A station whose plug or power is missing from OpenStreetMap is counted on its own line, never as slow, fast or compatible. The numbers are a floor, not a total: a station nobody has mapped is not here, and one that closed can still be.

Want the stations around you instead? Open the finder, press the button, and pick your plug under “My plug”. Your location is used on your device only. Plug labels are explained on the connector types page.

Questions people ask

How many EV chargers are there in San Francisco?

The figure at the top of this page is the number of charging stations in the OpenStreetMap data within 6 miles of a point in the middle of San Francisco, counted when the page opens. It counts stations, not single plugs, and it can differ from an operator’s own total because volunteers may not have mapped every station.

What counts as a fast charger here?

A station counts as fast when at least one of its plugs lists an output of 50 kW or more in OpenStreetMap. Stations that list no power are shown on their own line and are not guessed, so the fast count can be lower than the real number.

Which plugs does San Francisco have?

The plug table on this page shows how many stations list each plug type, taken from the same data as the finder. A station with several plug types is counted once under each, so the rows add up to more than the total.

Does this cover all of San Francisco?

It covers a circle of 6 miles around one point, not the city boundary. The circle can take in neighbouring towns and leave out the edges of the city. To search around your own position or another place, use the finder.

Does the page know if a charger is free or working?

No. The data comes from OpenStreetMap, which has no live status. Check the operator’s app or the station itself before you drive there.
